"The first thing I noticed is that you listened."

A CUSTOM HOME SHOULD START WITH A CONVERSATION

Before you spend money on full plans. Before you start collecting bids. Before you've committed to anything — there's a conversation worth having first.

That's the idea behind this post, and behind the video below.

We recently sat down with Trot, a Harbor Design client, to talk honestly about what our design process was actually like for him. Rather than tell you about it ourselves, we wanted to let him tell you.

This is the first in a short series from our conversation with Trot. More to come.

WHAT HE NOTICED FIRST

The first thing Trot said he noticed was that we listened to what he and his family were saying, then converted it into something they could actually see on a plan — without imposing a preconceived idea of how it should go.

That's not an accident. It's the approach: ask the right questions first, let the plan follow from there, rather than starting with a template and asking a family to fit their life into it.

WHY THIS MATTERS BEFORE YOU'VE SPENT ANYTHING

A lot of the most important decisions in a custom home get made before a single wall is drawn — what you actually need versus what you assumed you needed, what your lot allows, what your budget realistically supports, and where those three things overlap.

These are the kinds of things that are much easier to talk through early, before you spend money on full plans or start getting bids.

IF YOU'RE FURTHER ALONG

If you've already got a plan — maybe one you downloaded or one from an idea you've had — and you're not sure what to do with it, that conversation is still useful. We offer a free 30-minute video consultation where we'll talk through your lot, possible modifications, budget expectations, and what the next step should be.

No pressure, no obligation. Just a conversation.
